Birkbeck, University of London, founded in 1823, is one of the five major universities in the UK that do not participate in commercial rankings (the other four are UCL Institute of Education, London Business School, Cranfield University, and Sotheby's Institute of Art). The college is a research-focused academic institution, with over 90% of its academic staff dedicated to various research activities, excelling in academic research evaluations. Birkbeck has had four Nobel laureates among its staff.
In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 12 of its departments were rated as internationally excellent with 5* and 5 ratings. The 5* rated departments included English, History, and Spanish, while 5-rated departments included Crystallography, Earth Sciences, Economics, Art History, Law, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and German. Although Birkbeck does not participate in commercial rankings, it ranked 13th in the UK for academic scores in the 2001 Guardian RAE rankings, with 10 subjects placed in the national top ten. English and History ranked first nationally, while Economics, Political Science, Psychology, and Earth Sciences were all ranked in the top five across the UK. The college enjoys top-tier standards in both teaching and research with a world-class reputation.
In 2006, Birkbeck invested £33 million to establish a new campus in Stratford, East London, which opened in the fall of 2013. The new campus offers courses of the same standard as those in the central London campus, with students having the option to apply to study at either campus.
