Brown University is a private research university located in Providence, Rhode Island, and is one of the eight Ivy League schools. It is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and the first university in the country to admit students regardless of religious affiliation.
Established in 1847, Brown created the first engineering program in the Ivy League and was among the earliest institutions to emphasize media education. Students are required to live on campus from their first to third year. With an acceptance rate of less than 9%, admission to Brown University is highly competitive.
Brown collaborates closely with the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), one of the top art schools in the United States. Students from Brown and RISD can freely cross-register for courses at each institution. The Brown/RISD dual degree program allows students to earn both an A.B. degree from Brown and a B.F.A. degree from RISD within five years.
The Brown Bears, the university's athletic teams, encompass 38 sports, making it the third-largest collegiate athletics program in the U.S. (after Harvard and Princeton). The men's soccer team is particularly well-known. The annual "Spring Weekend" celebration, organized by students, includes concerts, food, and sports events to welcome the spring season.
Notable alumni include John D. Rockefeller Jr., CNN founder Ted Turner, and actress Emma Watson.
