Syracuse University was founded in 1870 and is a private research university located in Syracuse, New York. The campus is adjacent to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and students at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry can use some of Syracuse University’s facilities. This special relationship dates back to the founding of the university. Syracuse University has branches in New York City and Washington, D.C., and the city of Syracuse itself has good public safety, beautiful surroundings, and scenic lakes and mountains, making it a very pleasant and comfortable place to live. Syracuse University ranked 54th in the 2020 US News rankings, and it is renowned for its programs in journalism, communications, advertising, and media, earning the nickname "the cradle of anchors, reporters, and commentators" in the U.S. Its public administration program ranks first in the nation, with many other programs also in the top ten nationwide. The university excels in fields such as the School of Information Studies, Computer Science, College of Engineering, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Newhouse School of Public Communications, College of Visual and Performing Arts, School of Architecture, and School of Education. The university’s official color is orange, and its athletic teams are known as the "Syracuse Orange," with their uniforms primarily in orange or a combination of blue and orange. The official mascot is Otto, also known as Otto the Orange, which can be translated as "Orange Man" or "Tangerine Man." Syracuse University’s men’s basketball and men’s football teams have a long history and have produced many professional athletes in recent years. Notable alumni include former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, famous American screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, NBA player Carmelo Anthony, and many others.
