    School Introduction

Loughborough University is located in the town of Loughborough, Leicestershire, in the East Midlands of England, approximately 75 minutes by train from London. It originated as a small technical college established in 1909 and later developed into Loughborough College. Due to its achievements in sports, the college joined the Universities Athletic Union in 1929.

In 1952, the college was divided into four separate institutions: the engineering department became Loughborough College of Technology; the teacher training section became Loughborough Teacher Training College, renamed Loughborough College of Education in 1963; the arts and crafts department became Loughborough School of Art and Design; and the continuing education department became Loughborough Technical College.

In 1957, Loughborough College of Technology, which offered advanced engineering and applied science courses, was renamed College of Advanced Technology. The school expanded rapidly and became Loughborough University of Technology in 1966. Since gaining university status, the student population has grown from 1,850 to nearly 15,000.

Notable alumni include many sports figures such as Sir Sebastian Coe, David Moorcroft, Paula Radcliffe, and Steve Backley, along with Paralympic Games athlete Tanni Grey-Thompson; England Rugby World Cup coach Sir Clive Woodward; and footballers Bob Wilson of Arsenal and Scotland.

The university currently has more than 17,000 students and staff, with over 2,500 international students. There are approximately 800 students from mainland China, with over two-thirds of them pursuing taught master's courses in the business school and economics department.
