Newcastle University, located in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in the northeast of England, is a research-based university. Newcastle is the capital of the northeast region of England and is a hub for culture, social life, sports, education, and business. The city has a population of around 300,000, with more than 30,000 students spread across two universities.
The history of Newcastle University dates back to the establishment of the Medical and Surgical Academy in 1834. In 1852, this medical school merged with Durham University and was renamed Durham Medical School in 1870. By the early 20th century, the Durham University system was no longer suitable for further development, and in 1963, the British Parliament passed legislation that split the university into Newcastle University and Durham University.
Newcastle University is known for having one of Europe's leading medical schools and is renowned for its achievements in medicine, science, and the humanities. It is also one of the UK’s top universities for European Union research papers. The university has campuses not only in Newcastle but also in London, Singapore, and Malaysia.
As a member of the Russell Group of universities, Newcastle University is ranked 129th globally in the 2025 QS World University Rankings. The university comprises three main academic faculties: the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Medical Sciences, and the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering. Its medical school is the second in the world to be granted permission for human stem cell research.
