    Northwestern University (NU), with its main campus located in Evanston, Illinois, is a private research university. It also has campuses in Chicago and Qatar. Northwestern was founded in 1851 by John Evans (Evanston is also named after him) with the mission to serve the northwestern United States, including the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The university offers a wide array of academic programs with 12 schools providing 124 undergraduate programs and 145 master's programs. Notable schools include the Kellogg School of Management, the School of Education and Social Policy, the School of Law, the Feinberg School of Medicine, and the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Medill School is also a leader in journalism studies. Northwestern offers a broad range of doctoral programs and attracts over $500 million in research funding annually. The university's donations rank eighth in the U.S. among universities. Northwestern is the only private university in the Big Ten Conference, a sports league primarily based in the Midwest. The sports teams are called the Wildcats, and their mascot is Willie the Wildcat. Northwestern University Dance Marathon, a tradition since 1972, is a 30-hour event held every winter to raise money for charitable organizations in Chicago. The university's communications school has produced many actors, playwrights, filmmakers, and television directors, so many that it's been dubbed the "Northwestern mafia".
