The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC or Carolina) is a public research university located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Established in 1789, it is the oldest public university in North Carolina and the first among the 17 campuses of the University of North Carolina system.
The university is divided into three campuses: North Campus, Middle Campus, and South Campus. North Campus consists of Polk Place and McCorkle Place, while the Law School, Student Activity Center, and stadium are located in the Middle Campus. The School of Medicine, UNC Hospital, and the School of Business are located in South Campus.
The university is composed of numerous schools, including the prestigious Kenan-Flagler Business School, School of Education, School of Law, School of Medicine, Gillings School of Global Public Health, School of Social Work, School of Government, and the top-ranked Eshelman School of Pharmacy. UNC also has its own hospital specializing in cancer treatment.
UNC's sports teams are called the Tar Heels, and they compete in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The mascot is Ramses the ram. The term "Tar Heels" was originally used as a derogatory term for people from North Carolina, but it is now a symbol of pride. UNC is famous for its men's basketball, women's soccer, and women's field hockey teams. Notable NBA stars such as Michael Jordan and Vince Carter played for the university's basketball team. The university's biggest rival is Duke University.
UNC alumni are called Tar Heels, and they include notable figures in politics, sports, entertainment, and business. Famous alumni include former U.S. President James K. Polk, NBA legend Michael Jordan, late ESPN broadcaster Stuart Scott, and Pepsi founder Caleb Bradham.
