Santa Clara University (SCU), founded in 1851, is a private Jesuit university located in Santa Clara, California, within the globally renowned Silicon Valley, just an hour’s drive from San Francisco. The campus spans 104 acres. Historically, the university was an all-male institution for 110 years until it admitted women in 1961, making it the first co-educational Catholic university in California. The current student body includes 4,643 undergraduate students and 3,417 graduate students, with international students making up approximately 2% of the student population. In the 2020 US News rankings, Santa Clara University is ranked 54th in the nation, and has been consistently ranked 2nd in the Western US for the past 15 years. Its business and engineering programs are particularly popular, and its law, education, counseling psychology, and theology schools are also of high quality. The university offers over 100 student organizations, providing students with ample opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities and expand their networks. The university's athletic teams, the Santa Clara Broncos, compete in over 20 NCAA Division I sports, with soccer and volleyball being the most prominent. They also have the Ruff Riders, a student club dedicated to supporting the teams, which is the largest campus organization. Notable alumni include former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jane Goodall, United Nations Peace Ambassador Janet Napolitano, and Khaled Hosseini, author of the bestselling novel "The Kite Runner."
