    The University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) is the flagship institution of the University of Colorado system. Established in 1876, it is a public university with three campuses located in Boulder, Denver, and Colorado Springs. The Boulder campus is situated at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in the city of Boulder. The university is composed of 9 colleges and offers more than 150 academic programs, with 124 bachelor’s degrees in arts and sciences, 94 master's degree programs, and 58 doctoral programs. The university has nearly 30,000 students. In the 2020 U.S. News rankings, CU Boulder was ranked 104th in the U.S. The university is particularly renowned for its programs in astrophysics and planetary science, biochemistry, biology, business and entrepreneurship, engineering, English, geography, music, and psychology. Its strengths in optics and atomic research are exceptional, ranked first in the U.S.; in engineering, aerospace engineering sciences is its most distinctive program, ranked 12th in 2011 by U.S. News; its department of atmospheric and oceanic sciences, though relatively new, has rapidly risen into the top five in the U.S. CU Boulder offers a vibrant social life and numerous student activities, including many parties and entertainment events. The university also collaborates with the Boulder government to host various film and cultural events such as the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, art galleries, museums, and Rolling Stones concerts. Notable alumni include Steve Wozniak, South Park creators, 17 Nobel Prize winners, 7 MacArthur Fellowship winners, and numerous astronauts.
