    University of Iowa is a public university founded in 1847, and it was the first coeducational public university in the United States. Its campus is located in Iowa City, a town known for its simple living environment and good security, having been ranked by Editor and Publisher magazine as one of the most livable places in the United States. The university currently has over 29,000 students, with international students making up 7% of the total student body. In the 2020 U.S. News rankings, it was ranked 84th in the country. The university consists of 11 colleges, with its Law School and College of Education ranked 24th and 28th, respectively. Its College of Medicine, College of Engineering, and College of Business are also highly regarded. In particular, the medical program is renowned, with its associated hospital being ranked among the top hospitals in the U.S. for 17 consecutive years. The MBA program at the College of Business is also highly popular, ranked 29th in the world by U.S. News and World Report. The University of Iowa participates in the Big Ten Conference, one of the major collegiate athletic conferences in the U.S. It also has over 500 student organizations, with 10% of students joining one of the 40 fraternities and sororities. Notable alumni include space physicist James Van Allen, who discovered the Van Allen radiation belts, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre founder Lin Hwai-min, and many famous Taiwanese writers and poets such as Bai Xianyong, Nie Hualing, Yu Guangzhong, Zheng Chouyu, and Yang Mu.
