    The University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, often abbreviated as UIUC, Illinois, U of I, or University of Illinois, is located in the peaceful Twin Cities of Urbana–Champaign, Illinois. Founded in 1867, it is the second oldest public university in the state of Illinois, after Illinois State University. The university is renowned worldwide as a prestigious public research institution and is a member of the Association of American Universities. The campus is home to the second-largest library system in the United States, behind Harvard. All freshmen are required to live on campus. Located in the flat plains of Illinois, which is a traditional agricultural area, the university is easily accessible via highways to Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis. The university also operates its own Willard Airport and aviation flight school, with connections to Chicago, Detroit, and Dallas. The university consists of 17 colleges and one department of continuing education, offering over 150 academic programs.
