Cornell University is a private research university located in Ithaca, New York, with additional campuses in New York City and Qatar. Founded in 1865, Cornell is the only Ivy League school established after the American Revolution, with the mission to contribute to all fields of knowledge—from the classics of world literature to the natural sciences, and from theory to practice. This vision has become the university's motto.
The Cornell University Library consists of 20 units and is one of the largest academic research libraries in the United States. It has also established a joint resource network with libraries at Tsinghua University, East China Normal University, and National Taiwan University. Cornell University is composed of 7 undergraduate colleges and 7 graduate schools, including the renowned S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management, College of Engineering, Law School, Weill Cornell Medical College, College of Veterinary Medicine, and School of Hotel Administration.
The university’s athletic teams are known as the Big Red, with more than 30 teams, most famously the men's ice hockey team. Cornell is a member of the ECAC Hockey League and the ECAC.
Notable alumni include 34 Marshall Scholarship winners, 29 Rhodes Scholars, 50 Nobel Laureates, former Citigroup CEO Sanford Weill, former MasterCard CEO Robert Selander, and E.B. White, author of Charlotte's Web. Chinese alumni include Hu Shi, Tsai Ing-wen, and Lee Teng-hui.
