    School Introduction

The University of St Andrews, founded in 1413, is the oldest university in Scotland and, in England, it has the third-longest history after the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. The university has deep connections with the United States, with several Scottish-Americans related to the institution, including three signatories of the United States Declaration of Independence, such as Benjamin Franklin. As a result, the university has the highest percentage of American students in the UK, with 15% of its students coming from the United States.

The University of St Andrews is composed of three colleges: the College of Arts, the College of Science, and the College of Divinity. Its teaching and research have always been at a world-class level, and the university consistently ranks in the top ten in various UK university rankings. In the 2003 TIMES university rankings, it ranked seventh in the UK.

A unique feature of the University of St Andrews is its red gowns. The university has maintained the tradition of undergraduate students wearing red gowns, a custom rarely seen in other UK universities. Students are encouraged to wear their red gowns during major gatherings, creating a spectacular sight of a sea of red wool flowing along the streets of the town. Under current law, groups of three or more students wearing red gowns can block traffic.

Notable alumni include the Scottish royal James II, Prince William (Duke of Cambridge), and Catherine (Duchess of Cambridge). The university has also produced many political leaders, social activists, and religious figures, including John Witherspoon and James Wilson, two signatories of the Declaration of Independence and Founding Fathers of the United States. The university has also produced five Nobel laureates, with awards in Medicine, Chemistry, Literature, and Peace.
