    School Introduction

    New York University (NYU) is a private research university located in New York City (New York, NY). The university's emblem includes a torch, inspired by the one held by the Statue of Liberty, representing the university's location in New York City. The figures and laurel wreath in the emblem, as well as the purple color, symbolize Athens—the ancient center of knowledge and wisdom.

    NYU has very high admission standards, with fierce competition for entry into its Stern School of Business and Tisch School of the Arts. The main campus, Washington Square, is located in Greenwich Village, downtown Manhattan, with several research institutions and teaching centers situated in the Upper East Side and Wall Street. The Brooklyn campus is located in the MetroTech Center in downtown Brooklyn. NYU also has campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai, and 13 global academic centers in Washington, D.C., Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Sydney, and more.

    The university is composed of several colleges and institutions, with six academic centers spread across Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn. Notable schools include: the Stern School of Business, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, School of Law, School of Medicine, Silver School of Social Work, and Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Tisch School of the Arts is renowned for its drama and film programs, with notable alumni such as director Martin Scorsese and Ang Lee.

    NYU's sports teams are called the Violets, with the Bobcat as their mascot. The university is a member of NCAA Division III and the college sports association.

    NYU boasts 36 Nobel laureates, 30 Pulitzer Prize winners, 30 Oscar winners, 4 Abel Prize winners, as well as numerous Emmy, Tony, and MacArthur Prize recipients. Famous alumni include actress Angelina Jolie, actress Rooney Mara, director Ang Lee, director and screenwriter Woody Allen, Xerox CEO Ursula Burns, IBM founder Charles Ranlett Flint, former Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou and his wife Chow Mei-ching, among others.
