Purdue University, also known as Purdue, is a public research university located in West Lafayette, Indiana, in the American Midwest. Established in 1869, Purdue University has six campuses, with the main campus in West Lafayette. It has about 40,000 students and is one of the universities in the United States with the highest number of international students. In 2011, Purdue had 7,934 international students, making up nearly 20% of the total student body. Purdue is ranked 57th on the 2020 US News rankings and is listed among the top 50 universities in the world by Times Higher Education. It is ranked 18th among public universities in the U.S. According to US News, Purdue’s programs include Aerospace Engineering (ranked 4th in the U.S.), Engineering (ranked 9th), and Research (ranked 8th). Purdue offers over 200 majors for undergraduate and graduate students, with its most famous colleges being Engineering, Aerospace, and Agriculture. Purdue’s College of Engineering consistently ranks in the top 10 in the U.S., and Purdue is ranked first in the U.S. for the number of engineers. Purdue’s sports teams are known as the Boilermakers, and they compete in the NCAA Division I/A and are a member of the Big Ten Conference. The university focuses on American football and basketball, with the football team being a major member of the Big Ten Conference. Purdue also has teams in baseball, soccer, tennis, swimming, and track and field. The student life at Purdue is also very active, with 45 fraternities and 25 sororities, involving approximately 5,000 students, making it the third-largest student body in the U.S. Notable alumni include Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, physicist Deng Jiaxian, biochemist Edwin T. Mertz, and several Nobel laureates in Physics and Chemistry.
