    School Introduction

    The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth), also known as UMassD or UMD, was founded in 1895. It is a public research university and one of the campuses of the University of Massachusetts system, located in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, situated between the cities of New Bedford and Fall River along the southern coast of the state. It is about an hour's drive from Boston and 2.5 hours from New York City.

    The university has approximately 7,982 undergraduate students and over 1,000 graduate students. UMass Dartmouth is ranked 218th in the U.S. News 2020 rankings. The university offers six colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the Charlton College of Business, the College of Engineering, the College of Nursing, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, and the School for Marine Science & Technology. The university provides 88 degree programs, more than 40 minors, 25 graduate programs, and 15 certificate programs. The College of Engineering is the most renowned, offering the highly successful Cooperative Education and Internship Program (CEIP) that combines classroom learning with work experience, allowing students to earn wages and gain practical experience while studying.

    Other popular programs include Nursing, Marine Science, Business, Visual and Performing Arts, Textiles, and Portuguese Studies. The university offers over 100 student clubs and organizations, including about 10 fraternities, sororities, and student government associations. The surrounding area offers easy access to shopping, with major centers like Walmart, Target, and Dartmouth Mall nearby, and the university provides shuttle service to these shopping centers.
